KA -Â TROPIKAL FLAMINGO
This artwork was created using different art techniques and mediums. Each child’s hand was painted twice from a selection of crimson red, pink, black or grey and then printed onto watercolour art paper. Once dried, the handprints were cut out and carefully placed on the backing board to form the feathers of the flamingo. The background was created using bubble wrap, where paint was brushed on to the bubble side of the wrap and then pressed gently on to the board. The colours were deliberately chosen to contrast the boldness of the flamingo. The golden paint for the legs add a touch of elegance to the artwork of this majestic tropical bird.
KS – UNBE-LEAF-ABLE!
KS was inspired by the magnificent trees in our school environment. We looked at images of different leaves online and we discussed their different shapes, sizes and textures. Then we went outside into the playground to find some interesting leaves of our own. Next, we chose two leaves each to cover in black ink. We used a roller to make prints of our leaves onto textured card.
KC - PAPER LION
Our class artwork is called ‘Paper Lion’. We chose to make a paper collage of a lion because lions are strong, courageous and fearless, and that’s what we are in KC. We are strong individuals, thriving in our first year of school. We started our artwork by choosing the colours of the paper we would be using and cutting them into strips. After that, we stuck the strips on to our lion template to make a beautiful mane. Then we cut out leaves from green cardboard and pasted them around the mane. We finished off by giving our lion his facial features such as eyes, nose and mouth.
KW - BIRDS OF ALL COLOURS
In our class, we researched pictures of a range of birds, particularly looking at the similarities and differences between them. For example, we looked at the bird profiles, and how they all had different beaks and body shapes. We then had lots of experimentation with drawing them on paper, with the aim of having a range of birds. We collected a selection of paint swatches - seven different colours with three different gradients. When we were ready, we drew our birds on the swatches, firstly with pencil and then traced over with permanent marker. We then sorted the swatches to look like a rainbow.
1A - JUST PEAR–FECT
After listening to the story ‘Each Peach Pear Plum’ by Janet and Allan Ahlberg, 1A thought pears would be an ideal choice for our class artwork. We each painted a pear in a different colour to create a gradient. We practised using long brushstrokes to create a smooth finish. The final step was to trace and cut out a pear shape to create an artwork that was just pear-fect.
1B - ANIMALÂ PORTRAITS
Our class artwork is called ‘Animal Portraits’. Inspired by our school photos early in the year, 1B created our version of portraits for a variety of animals. Each student created an individual coloured pattern using oil pastels, then painted the bright background colours with dye. After selecting our animal design, the body was cut out and pasted onto a backboard with details added such as big eyes. Once our animal portraits were created, we had to arrange them into lines just like our own school photos.
1L - SEAS THE DAY
1L wants to sail away on adventures around the world! Our sail boats are made up of geometric shapes of bold solid colour and soft blended watercolours. We looked at colour blending through identifying warm and cool colours and deciding which colours would mix seamlessly together. We used two techniques to paint our sails – long horizontal strokes and a dabbing effect on a water wash background. We hope our artwork makes you want to sail away too!
1M - COLOURFLY
Our class artwork is called 'Colourfly'. We each chose our 3 favourite colours and used different shaped sponges to apply them to art paper. We changed the angle of the sponge and used different pressure as we applied the paint to create a background as unique as each of us! A butterfly shape was then cut from each background and placed on our canvas at various heights to create a sense of depth and movement.
2/1C – AIN’T NO MOUNTAIN …
2/1C love a challenge. We enjoy working hard to achieve our best and always want to do even better. The mountain range in our artwork is a metaphor for the work we put in each and every day. Climbing a mountain is hard work and it’s a great feeling when you reach the top, but there is always a higher mountain to climb. Each child made their own mountain for the artwork. We used a range of coloured and textured papers glued on to the background to represent the challenges we face. The mountains are close together to show how 2/1C supports each other with our learning and the various colours and patterns represent how much fun we have achieving challenges together.
2H - HAPPY CACTUS
Our class artwork is called ‘Happy Cactus’. Inspired by our tropical themed classroom, 2H thought that this artwork was a wonderful way of representing us. In pairs, the children used acrylic paint and sponges to blend complementary colours on paper. Some created a gradient with the colours, while others experimented with tools such a toothbrush to create splash like effects. The children added texture to their paintings by using their fingers, plastic forks and cotton tips to make patterns. We cut the parts of the cactus out using a stencil and assembled the pieces by colour. We used two different shades of gold paper on the pot and in the cactus to give it that extra sparkle.
2N - A STARRY HOME
Our class spent time discussing the features of houses and working on our own designs. Each student created their house by cutting coloured paper into many different shapes and gluing them down. No two houses are the same, highlighting each class member’s uniqueness. The houses were placed in a spiral pattern to represent how each student brings their own individual traits to 2N.
2S – SHADES OF FRUIT
Our class artwork is called ‘Shades of Fruit’. We learnt about colour gradients to create the different shades in each fruit. We mixed paint colours adding white to make each shade slightly lighter than the last. Each of us chose a fruit and painted a colour to match. To finalise our artwork, we cut our paintings into triangles. Each piece of fruit has a triangle that was created by the children in our class. We chose the name ‘Shades of Fruit’ to represent the colour gradation effect.
3J – IN A WORLD FULL OF UNICORNS, BE A LLAMA!
Our class artwork is called ‘In a world full of unicorns, be a llama!’ In pairs or threes we chose a llama cut from thick white card. We explored ideas of how to dress our llama using different coloured wool, bells and pom poms on a template. We used different techniques such as braiding, weaving and twisting to create colourful, fun and individualised llamas. The llamas were then mounted at different heights and positioned on the board. It is important to us that each of our llamas in the one group are unique, showcasing how we are all different and beautiful within our 3J class.
3L – DIVE-ERSITY
Our class artwork is titled ‘Dive-ersity’. 3L used embossing tools on pieces of tin foil to create a school of fish. They were thoughtfully placed on to a painted backdrop. Each fish is unique, with different features, size and style. This is to send a message that no matter how you look or which way you are travelling or learning, it’s always best to work as a team to encourage and look out for each other.
3S – DELIGHTFUL DOLLS
In 3S we discovered that some of us have a love for Japanese culture so we put our heads and hands together…to get origami-ing! We practised our paper folding skills by creating three larger sized dolls until we were intricate enough to produce these delicate and smaller sized dolls. We honoured the detailed patterns and textures of our paper and creased our lines precisely. You can see our personalities in their little faces. Arigatou gozaimasu!
4C - ANIGAMI
Inspired by Japanese origami, 4C used markers and water colours paints to create these geometric animal designs. Students selected an animal, sketched the design in pencil using rulers, before tracing the lines with markers to create bold, sharp lines. They then delicately added water colour paints in an organic way to juxtapose the rigidity of the animal figures.
4M ARE TOPS
After collecting numerous varieties of plastic bottle tops over the course of two months, 4M were shocked to see the 'Rumpelstiltskin' pile of potential landfill growing in the corner of our classroom! Making artistic beauty from rubbish is a marvellous feat indeed. The class discussions that our artwork stimulated about better environmental practices by reducing, reusing & recycling were inspiring. We hope you enjoy our 'Tree Top Artwork' as much as the students have enjoyed creating it.
4S - SCHOOL OF FISH
Our ‘School of Fish’ artwork was created through the technique of paper folding. This task allowed students to use and develop their understanding of symmetry and geometry. Students followed a series of instructions, which required them to carefully fold a piece of printed origami paper until they had created a fish. This took patience, determination and resilience, as it wasn't as easy as it first appeared to be. As students 'swim' through their school years, we look forward to watching the students of 4S continue to develop the qualities they displayed whilst completing this artwork.
5A - ANGEL WINGS
There is something magical about angels. 5A’s beautiful ‘Angel Wings’ are made up of over 360 individually painted feathers. Each child used watercolours and carefully designed a series of feathers that were then cut out and arranged to make the stunning wings. These wings represent love, hope and comfort in the knowledge that our loved ones watch over us and are by our sides always.
5K - POINTS OF PURITY
5K used watercolour paints to create this beautiful lotus inspired flower. Students each painted a piece of paper using watercolour paint to blend and bleed the colours together. This created the amazing patterns and texture that can be seen in the artwork. We then cut the paper into the shape of a petal to form the flower.
6/5T - THE MERMAID’S TALE
This artwork is a collaboration of design and colour. Our inspiration was the ocean and the calming elements of the sea. Each student has contributed to the artwork by mixing colours and painting arc shapes using thick brush strokes. The use of acrylic paint mixed with impasto and its application provides an interesting textural element. A graduation of colour and hues create a cool and inviting piece of art to enhance any living area.
6J - MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHT (AND DARK) WORK
The students of 6J enjoyed the experience of combining technology and artistic expression to create a beautiful artwork. The students chose their subject matter which included each of their hands, and created a photographic composition. They focused on the manipulation of the variables of light, contrast and shadows to change the aesthetics of their pictures. The images have been mounted on black board to highlight the contrasting black and white tones.
6W – REMEMBER THE DAYS
To mark the end of 6W’s primary school days, every student strategically took photos around Lane Cove West. Can you figure out what each photo is of? What memory does it trigger? From snapshots reminding students of days spent playing on the equipment or netball courts to the much loved chickens. From the buildings and paths so often travelled to adventures on our secret patch of green. These are 6W’s memories of Lane Cove W
